Basic Life Support (BLS- CPR)
This American Heart Association class is the basic CPR class that is recommended for everyone but is required for employees that have direct patient care. It is a 4-hour class and a 2-year certification, so it needs to be repeated every 2 years. This class teaches the basics of resuscitation for Adults, Children and Infants and teaches the use of the AED and what to do when someone is choking. Anyone can take this as it is valuable life skills. Classes are limited to 6 students. The initial class is 4 hours and must be taken by anyone that is expired, have never taken it before, or just wants some extra practice time because they don’t use those skills often. The Refresher classes are 2.5 hours and can be taken by anyone that feels confident in BLS and still has a current BLS card. This class is more fast paced and meant for experienced providers. If a student fails the refresher class they will be asked to enroll in an initial class at a later date.

Heartsaver first Aid and CPRÌý
This American Heart Association class is the basic first aid and CPR class that is recommended for lay rescuers. It is an 8-hour class and a 2-year certification. This is an 8 hour class if you take a refresher or a 16 hour class if you take the initial. To be eligible to take the refresher course you must have a current, non-expired ACLS card (meaning you have to have taken the American Heart Association ACLS course within the past 2 years). Class sizes are limited to 6 students. Students are required to complete a pretest for this course. Initial courses are offered every other month and refresher courses are offered on the alternate months.Ìý

STABLE (Sugar & Safe care, Temperature, Airway, Blood Pressure, Lab Work, Emotional Support)
Post-resuscitation, pre-transportation stabilization and care for sick infants. This course is offered twice yearly by an instructor that flies in to teach for us. There is no limit on class size. There is a required pre course knowledge test that the instructor will go over at the start of class but no other pre course work.

NRP (Neonatal Resucitation Practitioner)
This course focuses on the immediate care and resuscitation of newborns. The course twice yearly by an instructor that flies in to teach for us. Class size is limited to 8 students. The course has required online pre course work. Students will complete the ADVANCED online modules and take the written test prior to attending the skills check off session. More information on how to register for the online portion will be sent to students after confirming their seat in the class.

Trauma Nurse Core Course. This 2 day course provides nurses with a 4 year certification for trauma care at the nursing level. Students will participate in 2 in person class days with an excellent instructor that we fly in specifically for this course. Class is limited to 6 students.

Techniques for Effective Aggression Management (TEAMS)
De-escalation training teaches students to slow down, create space, and use communication techniques to defuse a potentially dangerous situation. De-escalation training provides healthcare workers with strategies to calmly deal with people who are experiencing mental and emotional crises. This class can be taken by any employee. All classes offer a basic and advanced (please specify when requesting to join the class whether you will be taking basic only or basic and advanced). The basic training focuses primarily on verbal de-escalation strategies and the advanced training focuses on how to safely remove yourself from a physically violent threat with hands on techniques and defensive strategies. The basic class is for everyone, and the advanced can be taken by anyone but should be taken by anyone that has direct patient contact whilst in performance of their duties. The basic class is required yearly and can be taken on healthstream but the advanced training should be taken every other year. For those employees required to take advanced training the full in person basic and advanced can be taken every other year and you will be excused from the healthstream learning on those years that you take the in person class. Another option is to take the basic training online every year and only take the advanced training in person every other year.Ìý

Emergency Trauma TechnicianÌýÌý(ETT) (40 hours)Ìý
Students must be at least 14 years of age and have a current BLS card. This course primarily focuses on the treatment of traumatic injuries. Class will be run in hybrid fashion where much of the coursework will be completed online and then an in person skills session will happen. Online course happens at a study at your own pace for approximately 4 weeks. Students must complete the online course work prior to attending the in person sessions. The in person skills sessions are held in Nome at the WTC and are REQUIRED, failure to attend this skills session at the end of the class will result in dismissal from the course and incomplete grade. During the online portion of the course there will be required 30 min weekly zoom meetings held at 6pm on Tuesdays to check in with the instructor and ask any questions you may have. There is also a required textbook for this class that can be picked up after registering for the course. Successful completion of this course earns students a 2 year ETT certification. With this certification a person can volunteer with the ambulance service, these skills are also very important life skills that may come in handy when you least expect it. Emergency Medical Technician I Bridge course (EMT 1-B) (80 hours)Ìý
Students enrolling in this class must be a State of Alaska currently certified (not expired) ETT and have a current BLS card.Ìý This course builds on the basics of the ETT curriculum and adds in a lot of medical training. This class will be run in hybrid fashion. All online course work must be completed prior to attending the required in person skills sessions. In order to pass this class and complete the course for certification as an EMT 1 students will need to complete all course work, participate in all required skills sessions AND pass the state of Alaska written exam with > 70%.Ìý

Emergency Medical Technician II (EMT 2) (56 hours)Ìý
Students enrolling in this class must be a State of Alaska currently certified (not expired) EMT 1 and have a current BLS card. Students must also show proof of 10 patient contacts as an EMT 1 prior to the first day of class (form found online at the state website). Students during this class will be starting live IV’s on each other so students must consent to this prior to class (volunteers are appreciated). This class will be run in hybrid fashion. All online course work must be completed prior to attending the required in person skills sessions.Ìý

EMT 1 refresher course hours. Required biannual training. A portion of this training will be performed on TopHat via distance learning and then there will be 2 skills days with BLS included in Nome.

EKG Recognition Course
Students enrolling in this class should expect an in depth look at basic EKG interpretation. This class will start from the very basics and move into the rhythm recognition of Sinus, Atrial, Junctional, Ventricular rhythms and AV blocks. It is a great refresher for people that have been previously trained in EKG’s or a great way to start learning if you are just starting out. This is a study at your own pace, online course that will open July 1st, 2022. Students will complete 4 video modules at their own pace, on their own time and will take short quizzes to test their understanding as they go along. There will be a packet to pick up from education prior to the class with some practice EKG strips to help students along the way. Students should expect to spend around 10 hours online with the video lectures and then additional practice with EKG strips as needed. This course is very flexible and there is no required in person skills sessions as you work through the course. At the end of the course there will be 2 in-person EKG interpretation practice sessions. Students can choose to come to either of the skills practice sessions. The practice sessions will be focused on interpretation of EKG’s as a group and are a great time to solidify your new skills and get help from the instructor if necessary. This course is a great preparatory aid for ACLS and PALS courses if you are a person that struggles with rhythm recognition during those courses. The course also briefly covers the AHA guidelines and the treatment of lethal arrhythmias.

What’s in our future?
We are working on additional trainings to include: 12 lead acquisition and basic 12 lead interpretation, Intubation and supraglottic airway insertions, RSI, Ultrasound IV, Foley catheter insertion, and medication calculations. If you have an idea for additional classes we could offer we would love to hear from you. We are also planning to schedule, with dates yet to be determined, EMT and Paramedic Refresher courses online, an ENPC class, a Fetal Heart Monitoring class, ALSO courses, and PHTLS trauma courses.
